Personality analysis: Getting to know the real you

Are you a head turner?

Is your wardrobe up-to-date?

Do you have felicitous fashion sense?

Imaghe Source: news.asiantown.net

If you find yourself nodding to all of these questions, then you may be the envy of others. However, there are those who possess these characteristics yet still feel like there’s a hole that needs to be filled. As an image consultant, I always find clients of this predicament. This could mean one of many reasons, including a lack of understanding of their true identity. This is often neglected, but knowing your true self is essential in understanding your existence and your level of confidence. Digging deeper into that empty space can mean the discovery of the answers you’ve been searching for.

When you analyze and recognize your true personality, you will uncover your real self-image. For instance, your lifestyle and career define the clothes and shoes you wear or the amount of make-up you have to put on.

David Borchard, Ed.D. NCC, affirms that ‘assessment’ is one of the keys to finding yourself. This includes identifying your “sources of passion” by thinking of the activities that perk you up (e.g., learning, leisure, and work). Determining these activities would also give way in discovering other potentials in your life, like untapped skills and interests.

In conclusion, here are some words of wisdom from Lou Habash’s directory of quotes. This one is from Maxwell Maltz, which goes: “Our self-image, strongly held, essentially determines what we become.”

Self-image: Creating better impressions

As an image consultant, I regret to see people reeling from the burden of feeling that they are not good enough for others. This may actually stem from an overall lack of positive self-impression, which affects their body movements, language tone, or facial expressions. I say that to succeed and gain respect from others, people must improve the way they see themselves.

People who work on enhancing their self-image will undoubtedly feel better than before even as they face life’s challenges. This is because good self-esteem springs from positive self-image. They can make better decisions, encouraging others to think and work positively, too. Subsequently, confidence will follow suit.

With that note, how can individuals develop better self-image? Here are five points to consider based on this article:

1. Comparing oneself to others never helps boost one’s self-image.

2. Being a team player and getting along with others is a plus.

3. Getting involved in worthwhile activities helps one feel fulfilled.

4. Attending self-enhancement classes, joining workshops, or enrolling in career-advancement seminars gives one an edge.

5. Concentrating on the niceties of life and putting the negatives on the sidelines foster a positive attitude.

While there’s no smooth road to creating a good impression, there are several options to take, such as those listed above. As what one of Lou Habash’s philosophies puts it: Change is possible at the proper timing and with the right attitude.

Because image matters: Manners and etiquette to remember

In today’s fast-paced world, etiquette seems to be a thing of the past. However, etiquette concerns far more than the proper placement of fork, the monogramming of stationery, and the use of a handkerchief.

Manners and etiquette are important because they build character and self-esteem, as well as create a positive environment. Moreover, they serve as ways on showing other people respect, especially in a professional setting. Though some actions are now considered old-fashioned, good manners, in general, will never be outdated.

Here are some examples of good manners and etiquette that must be observed even today:

Work etiquette

Business etiquette is about presenting yourself in the best light possible and showing people that you’re good at what you’re doing. This includes being punctual, listening to others, appearing professional and well-groomed, and finishing work assignments on time. Work etiquette also includes being gracious and courteous when speaking to colleagues, as well as making calls as soon as needed and promptly returning calls. More importantly, expressions such as “sorry” and “thank you” should not be forgotten.

Meeting people

When meeting people, both verbal and non-verbal behaviors help define how you make that first impression. Effective and comfortable handshakes, good eye contact, and proper introductions top Lou Habash’s guide on making a great first impression and establishing rapport.

Though it is usually left on the sidetracks, etiquette is still important and should never be forgotten. Good manners are a reflection of humility, which is a sign of strength rather than weakness

REPOST: Four things to consider when dressing for work

Bag that job, climb the corporate ladder, and get a client’s “YES” by wearing the proper work ensemble. Read more from this article.

Wearing appropriate business attire can go a long way in getting the job, getting the client, or moving up the corporate ladder. However, knowing what an appropriate work wardrobe is can be confusing, as it can vary depending on the industry, the company culture and your job. Before deciding what to wear to work, consider the following:

Look at the industry

Some industries are considered more traditional or conservative, while others are more progressive or contemporary. There may be a traditional business dress code for your industry.

What is your company brand?

The industry may be the same, but the company and product culture may be different. Even though your industry may have its standards for professional dress, your company may have an attitude of its own that sets it apart as a brand differentiating itself from the pack. What is your company culture? Is it formal, laid back, fashion-forward or fun?

Who will see you and how will they be dressed?

As a representative of your company, consider how you want your clients, co-workers and employer to react to you. Do you want to come across as Authoritative, Creative, Formal, Functional, Credible, etc.? The way you are dressed will have a direct impact on the way you are perceived, and how others respond to you and your company.

Maintain a consistent image

Some of us wear many hats: in any given day you may be at sales calls, a business mixer or a construction site; and you may feel you need to dress differently for various business-related activities. This can be challenging when getting dressed in the morning, and hard on the wardrobe. Although it is important to dress appropriately for where you will be and what you will be doing, it is still important to maintain a certain level of consistency. If one day you are wearing a matched suit and the next day jeans and a casual top, this can send mixed messages and confuse your client or your employer.

Suppose that someone is meeting you for the first time. What would a potential client or employer think when they first meet you? Do you fit their expectations for the industry, products and skills you are offering? Plan your work wardrobe with careful consideration. The image that you project is vital to establishing a business relationship quickly, and maintaining that relationship over time.

Fashion Plays With Plaid

Is the print on your clothes plaid or tartan? Read about both prints and the latest fashion trends this winter from this New York Times article.

Ever since Queen Victoria made plaid a part of fashion, draping checked fabrics over herself and over the furnishing of the newly acquired Balmoral Castle, the British royal family has continued to treat tartan as a fashion extra.

Just days before her pregnancy was announced, the Duchess of Cambridge wore the Black Watch tartan fitted coat designed by Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen during a visit to her alma mater. Prince William and his bride are not only alumni of St. Andrew’s University in Scotland, they also have the titles of Earl and Countess of Strathearn. It was that clan’s check scarf that the former Kate Middleton wore on the rain-soaked flotilla for Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in the summer. When the Duke of Cambridge was honored as Knight of the Thistle, the Duchess carried the folded Strathearn tartan scarf.

But tartan has had a more checkered fashion career than just the squares on which the patterns are founded. Vivienne Westwood commandeered plaid as a uniform for the Punk era at the end of the 1970s. And tartan has remained part of street style and a fabric with an aggressive twist.

For the winter 2012 season, the effect is more stylish than rakish, with plaid coats serving their long-held purpose to brighten up a cold-weather wardrobe. Designers often choose tartan for outerwear, but it also appears as narrow pants, tailored jackets and, in these days of digital prints, as a mix of geometric squares overlaid for a visually dramatic effect.

Queen Victoria might well have twirled round the Balmoral ballroom in a tartan gown. And that initiative has been followed by designers who are using the print of plaid on fabrics not associated with the usual weave.

New, too, are clash-of-the-tartans accessories, with the shoe supremo Christian Louboutin producing plaid platform soles, bold boots and purses similar in design to the Scottish sporran.

The know-how: Boost your confidence in a snap

For me, success is 10 percent luck, 55 percent determination and attitude, and 35 percent confidence. Yes, you’ve read that right, confidence is one of the key elements in achieving success. However, self-assurance is not always easy to come by. In fact, most people encounter the awful feeling of insecurity once in a while. So what should be done during these moments?

Lou Habash’s fail-safe confidence booster

Throughout the years, I’ve discovered ways on how to instantly boost my confidence. Self-help books, online articles, and my own sets of experiences enable me to become a more buoyant version of myself, which helps me a lot in my chosen profession as an image consultant. Besides, who would listen to me preach about improving one’s image, if I, myself, am a mess?

Apart from power-dressing, which, as mentioned in this article, helps many feel good about themselves, another factor to lift your confidence level lies not on what you wear from head to toe, but what you wear from ear to ear – a smile.

Smiling uplifts not only your spirit but others’ as well. I totally believe that it is infectious. Feeling nervous during a job interview? Smile. Having a hard time at work? Smile. It will not change the whole situation, but it can help you manage it.

Your confidence may also be affected by your social skills. Some clients approach me about their problem of building conversation with other people, of making new friends, out of the fear of not being liked. The harsh reality is that you should not expect everyone to like you, but you can always assume that they will. By doing so, you can be more poised in communicating with them. The positive mindset will translate to the persona that you give off. So, if you feel good about yourself and think that you’re likeable, you might actually ascribe it to your personality.

Here are other ways to feel confident in a snap:

- A visit to the gym
- A change in hair color
- Swipe of red lipstick
- Ditching junk food and going for healthier meal or snack options
- Self-reward or a pat on the back for big or small achievements

You should remember that self-doubt and pessimism are two things that hinder you from unleashing your true potential, so staying positive and confident is surely the way to go.
